I'm Seeing Gold

My daughter left for the TX State Championship XC Meet on Thursday. I made the 7 hour drive on Friday after watching my 8 year old in her 3rd grade play. This year I was really prepared for the trip before it crept up on me. I ordered books for the kids and I found these Saucony XC cleats on sale on Amazon for $21.99 before the race. All of which arrived on Wednesday! I'm really glad my daughter liked the Saucony cleats. When they came in I wasn't even sure if there were going to be shoes in tha

What's with this foot?

I had another post started but things have changed. My 20 miler a week ago Saturday went great. Probably the most enjoyable 20 I’ve ever run. I got to run the whole thing with friends who each ran 6-8 miles with me so I had someone with me the whole time. The weather was cold and windy but felt good and I finished strong. This past week my runs all went great…until Friday. Maybe this is where it actually went bad though I thought I was ok at the time. Just about a mile from being done on Friday

Galloway for the Win

In case anyone was wondering, I did cut back last week.  I ran 20 miles last week, 4, 3, 3, 6, 4.  I think it was the right choice because I definitely felt ready for more miles this week.   This week was my highest mileage week to-date in years. 28 miles run in 4, 6, 4, 10, 4. Granted, I still have 4 more to run tomorrow, but I don't think it will be an issue.  For my 4 miles yesterday I decided to go ahead and run them straight instead of the 5:1s.  I figured that for my 5:1 runs I was av

editor's note: from march 22, 2013. Writing about the homeless guys here yesterday made me think of this. Never forget that homeless guys are people too. And with a couple of wrong turns, we could all be there with them.   It’s all right, man. I’m only bleeding, man. I Bought These Shoes in 2004

“I bought these shoes in 2004” says the man working out behind me yesterday. What the what??   I started seeing a personal trainer over 2 years ago at the local gym. DS had just turned 2 and I was finally getting over some very painful back pain caused by picking him up. He was 9.5 lbs at birth so not your average child. The severe pain was a reminder that my core closely resembled a pile of spaghetti; apparently, having a baby—especially a hulk-sized baby—does quite a number on the bo

Its Like Getting Kicked Right Where IT Chaffes

The past two weeks my right knee has started hurting, on the inside portion right at the top of the tibia . Hurt while walking and sensitive to the touch. Did some icing and Ibuprofen while hoping it was just an inflamed tendon or something while knowing all along the familiar symptoms were that of an unhappy meniscus . The same knee as my 2015 miniscus surgery.  Today I go in for the MRI.    The first surgery went really well with no lasting effects from it whatsoever so it isn’t real inva

UP

I went to bed Sunday night with visions of a great week of running and getting to the gym in my head.  This would be the week I transitioned  to taking Monday as a rest day and slipping a short run in Sunday after church instead of my traditional nap.     But Monday night this happened:   And because I can’t just carve a plain ol’ jackolantern, I was up till 11:00 pm meticulously carving the first line of Bach’s Tocatta and Fugue in D minor into my pumpkin. Tuesday morning, I ju

Last Check-in!

Just to warn you, there is a lot of pre-race rambling for the second half of this post, mostly myself talking to me trying to figure out a pacing strategy. This is my last training check-in before my goal race.  Over the past two weeks my training has been: Sunday (10/22/17)- another beautiful day! Couldn’t skip out on another beautiful beach day with my Mom.  We’re weird, “beach day with my Mom” = walk/jogging 15-20 miles all around a shore town. Monday – rest day, legs were

Editor's note: Classic? Nah. Old? Yes. This is from Nov. 1, 2009. The big race coming up this weekend made me think about it. Still feels like yesterday. And I still haven't been back. --- Everyone has a few shirts in their drawer they just can’t get rid of. They’re old and worn but you can’t let them go. I'm holding mine today. I first ran the New York City Marathon in 1990. It was my first trip to the Big City, and i was overwhelmed. You go there thinking you know what it w

Ain't No Blues in This Chicago RR

“Keep your sunglasses on, I want to take a selfie.”   The Wife looked at me with a skeptically raised eyebrow. “A selfie? Since when do you take selfies?”   “Well-” I said “-this is a big trip, and I know you like to take the occasional selfie, so I thought you might want one.”   “Why the sunglasses? This isn’t for some stupid Blues Brothers joke you’re going to make that no one is going to get is it?”   “...”   “Yeah, I thought so, no selfie.”

Dear Running,

I love you but I need a break.  We’ve been spending an awful lot of time together over the last few months and I find myself drained and in need of some Elizabeth time.  I don’t want you to think that this has anything to do with you or with our relationship.  I still love you and I’m still going to take you to that big event this weekend just like I promised.  It’s just that after that, I need some time on my own. If I’m being honest, it feels like back in 2015.  We had gone throug

First Snow/New House

Here it is folks!  Not only did I get the keys to my new house yesterday at 3 pm but then it snowed like mad all day today so I snapped a picture of the first snow and my house combined.  I'm more in love with it every minute I'm there.    I could "wax poetic" about my home. I will be sleeping there starting Wednesday night (tomorrow) with minimal "stuff" because everything is in 2 storage trailers.  I met with the boiler guy this morning so I understood how the heating system operates and

It's easy to think the worst when things are going so right

I wasn't as sore as I expected to be from running the Cheyenne Mountain Run two Saturdays ago. I took the following Sunday off to rest and had a tempo scheduled for  Monday, but decided to take another day off just to make sure. Tuesday morning, I ran the 4 mile @ 8:50 tempo run but ran faster than that, and the run totaled 6 miles. I had no issues and felt pretty good. Since I had taken two rest days in a row, I decided to run 6 easy trail miles on Wednesday. For starters, my stomach

What is it? It's exactly what it sounds like. It's the chafing of the area along the crease of your ass before and/or after your anus. It may not be the most painful type of chafing but

Swamp Rabbit Marathon RR: That time I ran 26.2 miles dressed as beer stein

The first day after I ran 115 miles at Hinson Lake, I slothed like I had never before. My body ached from head to toe and though the brain fog seemed less intense than the prior year, it was still there. I lazed around the house, soaked my feet in an Epsom salt bath, snacked, and rested. I didn't actually feel any hungrier than normal - it is strange how sometimes I feel ravenous after a race and other times, it seems to have no effect.   Needless to say, running was out of the questio

Chasing Dreams

If you dare to dream big, you need to put in the work.  I have big dreams, and I am working hard. As Britney says, "you gotta work bitch."  It's become my theme song.  I get up in the morning, and I run.  I finish work, and I run.  I go out to a party, I run there and stumble back.  Anything to get in the miles. I've been enjoying the grind.  It gives me a sense of purpose, a mission.  And if my body holds up, I will finish 2017 with a fitness level I never thought possible.

Wineglass Marathon RR - Everything is Awesome!

TL;DR: Wineglass Marathon was amazing! I ran my most consistent race and got a PR by nearly 6 minutes. Parents and Loopsters made it extra-special. 10/10, would run again. The parents and I arrived in Corning, NY, late Friday afternoon. We checked into our hotel and met up with Liz and Peg for a drink and bite to eat nearby. It’s always great to catch up with Loopsters, and it was fun for my parents to meet some of the people that I talk about so much. It had been a long day of driving from

First RR in forever and a day...

I think the last race report I did on the old loop was either Chicago 2014 or maybe even Boston 2013... Anyway, that's about the time I kinda started losing the old running mojo.  It was a slow decent into lethargy.  I ran 6 races in 2014, including two 1/2's, and the Chicago Marathon in a steady 3:31 which was actually my 'easiest' marathon ever.  I felt great the whole way through, and ran basically 7:50-8:10 splits for every mile.  I was in excellent shape, but not running for any particular

Hills

There are no hills where I live. None. I am going to have to break out the treadmill and practice on incline because hills apparently take some experience. I ran the Howl-O-Ween Dog Run/Walk in Lubbock. There aren't a whole lot of hills in Lubbock either; however, they manage to find them for the few runs they have there each year. It was also freezing. Any recommendations on how to keep my toes from turning into ice and breaking off inside my socks?  I really thought racing would help me t

Weekly Wrap-up

Came home to enter the weeks runs and found that while I was at work last night Bobby and Bean had been on my computer.  Credit where it's due: they didn't lie to me.  Even told me they were on our to look for Halloween costume ideas.  Thing is, now my computer isn't turning on.   Aren't phones amazing?   This week's running wrap-up:   Tuesday: 3 miles (dead battery no stats) Friday: 3 miles 34:39 Saturday: 4 miles 50:42 1- 11:39 2- 12:02.
